Hi All, I need your help! We are trying to get the word out about a
situation out at Kirkwood involving the dogs and cats that were moved from
Animal Control to Kirkwood. See the email below. They are wanting to start
euthanizing these animals because of space issues and the time needed to do
formal paperwork to foster them or even adopt them out. Myself and a few
others have been out there volunteering and space is not an issue! We are
wanting to let people know they need good homes who could foster these
animals versus euthanizing them. If you can send this out to your animal
loving friends and family to spread the word and hopefully put a halt to any
killings until people have the chance to foster or even adopt first. Diane
who sent the email below was working directly with an Animal Control
employee last night who was telling her this. They want to do the
euthanizing at night so no one will know about it. I hope you can forward
this on for the sake of the animals! Thanks! Amy

Diane,
I’ve sent this email to Jackie Houy, she is or was the secretary on the
Board for Paws and More in Washington and she works at Kirkwood. This is an
outrage!!

Kandi,
I am volunteering at the Kirkwood animal shelter. I heard some disturbing
news from one of the employees Cedar Rapids Animal Control last night.
Commander Choates (from the CRPD who is in charge) is considering
euthanizing the animal shelter cats (the ones they had to evacuate from the
shelter due to flooding in their location) unless they are adopted out soon.
This is to make more room for animals. He is going to blame it on them being
sick. Some of them do have conjunctivitis which we all know can be treated.
Some of these are kittens who are not even a month or two old. The person I
spoke with is so upset she is about to quit or she is afraid she is going to
be fired due to her be so outspoken. She ask if he would consider allowing
fostering. TOO MUCH PAPERWORK..he would rather just kill them. I have
someone going out there this morning volunteering and told her if he decides
to do this to let me know.
First, they are not running out of room. Second, they have more food than
they know what to do with out there. Apparently, Petco has really stepped up
to the plate and is helping. In addition, folks are just pouring in out
there with donations. I am not sure what he thinks he is doing. Make his
numbers look better? I am very afraid (as is the shelter worker) with the
lack of organization that is out there, pets may be mistaken for strays and
euthanized. I realize that euthanization may be necessary in some
situations, especially if they are really sick. However, from my
conversation with the gal from animal control he is willing to euthanized
healthy animals.
Anyway, do you know any organizations that fosters cats? I know a number of
them that foster dogs. If I hear that Commander Choates is doing this, I
want to put pressure on him to allow fostering if I can find organizations
and people that will do it. If we can find foster care for some of these
animals and he will not allow it, I intend to go to the news media.
The other issue is that Animal control is going to start to waive adoption
fees. However, that news has not spread to the public. I am guessing they
dont want everyone to know that. Who knows what kind of people will show up
at the door.
Colleen..Do you have any contacts at the no kill shelter in Washington Iowa?

Thanks for all the good suggestions. I followed some of your suggestions, then I received this e-mail today:
I went out and volunteered at Kirkwood last night. They seem like they are doing a really good job! I talked to several different people that work there and also several different people brought in by animal rescue from out of state and all of them said that no animals are being put down and that the news is also wrong about the # of pets people can bring in. You can bring in as many animals that you have. I saw several different household that had 4 to 8 pets in there. Also they are giving vaccines to all of the pets, grooming them if they need it, putting flee meds on them, all pets have their cages cleaned twice a day (am and pm) are fed and watered twice a day, and dogs are walked twice a day and cats are petted and played with twice a day. The cats are in large dog carriers with litter boxes, food and water bowls and towels to lay on. Dog are in horse stables with food
